Overview

Wessex Water was operating on a fragmented technology estate of over 20 legacy systems that had accumulated over decades. Siloed tools for scheduling, asset tracking, field operations, and financial reporting created workflow bottlenecks, security vulnerabilities, and limited visibility across the organisation.

Veriland Consulting led a domain-driven digital transformation, replacing the legacy estate with a unified Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Azure platform. The programme centralised asset management, field service operations, supply chain, finance, and compliance reporting across 800+ users — with a zero-downtime cutover.

The Challenge

Water utilities operate in one of the most heavily regulated environments in the UK. Wessex Water needed to modernise its technology while maintaining continuous service delivery and meeting stringent compliance obligations.

  • 20+ fragmented legacy systems: Siloed tools for scheduling, asset tracking, and reporting created workflow bottlenecks and prevented operational teams from seeing the full picture.
  • Security vulnerabilities: Unsupported legacy applications posed increasing security risks and made compliance with industry regulations more difficult to demonstrate.
  • Disconnected field operations: Field teams working on leak detection, ground maintenance, and sewerage relied on disconnected systems with limited mobile access, slowing response times.
  • Manual processes: Spreadsheets and text-based notifications were still used for scheduling and reporting, introducing delays and errors into critical operational workflows.
  • No foundation for innovation: The legacy architecture could not support IoT sensor integration, AI-driven analytics, or real-time operational dashboards — capabilities increasingly expected by regulators and stakeholders.

Our Solution

Veriland designed and implemented a domain-driven transformation using the Microsoft Cloud stack, structured to replace legacy systems progressively while maintaining continuous operations throughout.

Unified Field Service Operations

Dynamics 365 Field Service was deployed to unify mobile operations for Ground Maintenance, Leakage, and Sewerage teams. Field workers now access job schedules, asset data, and work instructions on mobile devices, with real-time updates flowing back to central operations.

Enterprise Asset Management

Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management with Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) capabilities provides centralised control over the utility's physical asset estate. Asset lifecycle tracking, maintenance scheduling, and condition monitoring are all managed from a single platform.

Financial Operations

Dynamics 365 Finance consolidates all financial processes — general ledger, procurement, budgeting, and regulatory financial reporting — replacing multiple legacy finance systems and spreadsheet-based workflows.

Workflow Automation

Power Automate drives complex workflow management for work scheduling, approval chains, and notification routing. Automated processes replace the manual, text-based notification systems that previously caused delays.

Real-Time Analytics & Compliance

Power BI dashboards connected via Azure Synapse and Azure Data Factory deliver real-time compliance reporting, performance analytics, and operational visibility. Regulators and senior leadership can access audit-ready dashboards on demand.

Collaboration Layer

Microsoft 365 integration — including Teams, SharePoint, and Forms — provides the collaboration backbone, connecting field teams with central operations and enabling structured data capture in the field.
